Class Schedule

Start of Classes to Fall Recess

Week 1 (8/23): Introduction

  • 8/23 information, an introduction of the class, origami making exercise - everyone can be creative because everyone can make things!
  • Homework - create a personal profile page in this google doc which include (1) your name, a picture of you, some background - or something else, your goals for this class, and (2) find one interesting game, write a paragraph or two introducing it, and (3) what game you would want to build for this class, don't worry, none-biding, you can either do it as individual game or as teamwork, so this is just an initial poll, (4) a couple interesting readings about games - theory, critiques, review, stories, etc that you like the class to read as a group. (if you can't find them, don't worry, we have plenty listed on this site)
  • In class - group game play - think about SWOT analysis -presentation on Sep 6th.
  • (1) SWOT analysis, about rules, reasoning, strategy, 5W's and 1 H
  • (2) digitization of the game - come up with 3 variations to implement the game - online, tangible, augmented, remote, collaboration, etc. etc.
  • (3) add or change the purpose of the game - addressing dimensions of Wellness - physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, occupational, cultural, etc. etc.
  • Future schedule - next week - Tuesday, more game play first half, and discuss reading - Design and the Play Instinct, and the Study in play, pleasure and interaction design
  • Then the following week of 9/6 we will do Pecha-Kucha presentation of the SWOT analysis, digitization of the game, and the new purpose of the game.

Week 4 (9/13): Shall we play

Presentation of Game Ideas - each person will do a Pecha Kucha (20 x 20) presentation of several (3-5) game ideas you would like to work on - the following week would be group work

Team work time to figure out what games you would like to do together, form team, make a 1 minute (or no more than 2 minutes) vision video of how the games would be played (could be stop motion, sketch, animation, recording of acting, etc.)

Week 17 (12/13): Final Project Documentation Due

  • Final Project documentation due - please post electronic copy on Class Face Book page link and send email to ellen indicate when you have done so.
  • The project documentation should include title of the project, motivation (why you are doing this), related work (what did other people do that's similar to your project), design and implementation of the project (explain the process, system architecture, design schematics, etc, so that a smart graduate student can learn from your project by being able to reproduce it at least), and discussion (what's the contribution and uniqueness of this project, and what are the lessons learned, what are the challenges and issues, and what are the possible future work, etc. Welcome to relate to any of the readings or discussions from any of the class sessions, or any other people's project.)
  • (final paper due 12/13)
